2021.09.19 18:21 Keldr Comparing Strahd's Origin Stories from I, Strahd and Curse of Strahd

I, Strahd fleshes Strahd out as a character more so than Curse of Strahd, since the novel is from his perspective. I was particularly struck by key differences in how Strahd becomes a vampire in the novel versus the adventure. There were many details that shed light on aspects of the adventure, and I wanted to discuss them with the community.

  1. Dark Powers - In the adventure, Strahd first interacts with the Dark Powers during his wizardly studies, and makes a pact with them to ward off immortality. In the novel, his first encounter with the Dark Power entails a promise of Tatyana falling in love with Strahd. Strahd goes through with the Dark Powers' instructions without understanding how it will affect him. The adventure casts Strahd's vampiric nature as part of his intellectual pursuits into magic. The novel hints at Strahd learning of the Dark Powers throughout the novel, but the real driving force for him becoming a vampire is emotion. His desperate desire for Tatyana summons the Dark Power, and shapes everything he does that makes him the monster he is.
  2. First Victim - In the adventure, Strahd first kills Sergei to seal his pact with the Dark Powers. In the novel, Strahd kills his steward, who was trying to deliver warnings to Strahd and overheard Strahd's evil plotting. This character, Alek Gwilym (a relation of Godfrey Gwilym's I believe), was "as close to a friend" as Strahd could get. Strahd confronts and kills Alek, drinks his blood to fulfill the 1st step of the Dark Powers pact, then hides his corpse in his bedchambers. The mists later steal this body away without explanation. I can totally understand the adventure wanting to cut this, because its a more complex relationship that can't be clearly summarized. Alek delivers the first line of the novel, which is a warning about assassins. That warning of impending death shapes the whole novel. That warning is the definitive detail for Strahd's environment too-- he is surrounded by ruthless, tentative allies and in a precarious position of power requiring extreme violence to maintain. Alek is the only person Strahd really trusts, a fellow warrior, a clever tacticitian, a spy. In many ways, he resembles Rahadin, which I think can shed more light on the importance of Strahd murdering him. Although the novel has a muddier path to becoming a vampire, it helps me as a DM to have a clearer vision of the kinds of murders Strahd has committed in the past in order to become what he is in my game.
  3. Tatyana - In the adventure, Strahd pursues Tatyana through his castle, "determined to make her accept and love him". Tatyana kills herself explicitly to avoid Strahd. In the novel, Strahd follows a grieving Tatyana to the overlook, and tries to console her. He half-confesses his feelings for her, and he turns her grieving hug into a kiss. Tatyana pulls away, confused by the action. At this point, an assassination plot is unfolding in the castle. Leo Dilisnya and his goons are killing all the wedding guests, and trying to find Strahd to kill him too. A distracted Strahd gives commands to his few remaining loyal soldiers, and promises Tatyana that they will be able to defend themselves. Tatyana instead throws herself off the overlook. Again, I can understand the appeal of the adventure's more direct version of events. Strahd's desire directly leads to Tatyana's suicide. This is true in the novel too, but the whole scene is much more complex. Strahd isn't just a rape-predator chasing his quarry (he becomes that in a few hundred more years), he is trying to console Tatyana, to get closer to her, to reveal his own love, to protect her, to possess her. I'm not making any kind of defense for Strahd there, other than to point out that he has a number of reactions and feelings in that scene. Tatyana's decision to kill herself is a LOT more about Sergei than it is about Strahd, and I personally really love that. Strahd still causes her to kill herself, but it's simply through shattering her will to live when he murdered Sergei. I think it's a more torturous occurence for Strahd. He truly believed he could kill Sergei, get away with it, and genuinely turn Tatyana's brotherly affection towards him into romantic love. He didn't understand, or care, about Tatyana's feelings for Sergei. Tatyana's final act can also be read so many ways: hopeless without Sergei, disgusted by the dawning awareness of Strahd's desire for her, feeling trapped in knowing she can't refuse him, and/or wanting to die on her own terms rather than be savagely murdered by traitors.
  4. Treacherous Guards - In the adventure, the guards "seize the opportunity" to kill Strahd, somewhat implying that it is his act of driving Tatyana to suicide that makes the guards want to kill him. In the novel, the treacherous guards are rebels led by Leo Dilisnya who are attempting to seize power over Barovia as part of a power grab planned for decades. They kill almost every guest at Sergei's wedding party, including many children. They shoot Strahd with dozens of arrows, and as it seems he is slowly dying, they bring him into a chamber with a few remaining hostages. Strahd recovers from his wounds and begins his slaughter of the guards, much to the horror of the few hostages still on his side (one of whom is Lovina Wachter!). I personally think the novel's version of events is far more fascinating. Understanding that Strahd was facing constant threat of betrayal explains his decision to pursue vampiricism; it was the only way an aging warrior like him could ensure continued victory over his enemies. The nugget of Leo being the one who planned all this, and a young Wachter being present for the events, sheds so much important light on Vallaki. What more justification does Lady Wachter need to ally herself to Strahd than her ancestors were literally saved by him? I wish the adventure incorporated this. "Strahd's no devil! Whatever magic he employed that night, it not only saved my great-great grandmother (or whatever), it's the only reason me and my sons are breathing even now! The Wachters literally owe our existence to that man." I am also fascinated by the fact that Strahd's monstrous transformation occurred during a horrific event, and that him becoming a vampire actually allowed him to save a few innocents from a tragic fate unrelated to his recent evil deeds. Saving these people doesn't redeem Strahd, but it adds complexity to his origins.
I know my thoughts won't likely directly applicable to your games, but I hope that talking about the differences in versions of Strahd can help DMs run him as a character.

2021.09.19 18:21 rs-throwaway2007 100 days free from RuneScape

27M, playing since 2004 (RS and OSRS), with over 30,000+ hours play time (i.e. over 1200+ days) on ONE account (e.g. maxed, comped, 120s, 200M exps, high killcounts).
Likely thousands of hours in other games too.
Earlier this year, I e-mailed Jagex to permanently delete all of my accounts, and after 3 weeks (where I still logged in a few times to do dailies lol), I finally couldn't log into any account anymore.
100 days since then, I feel like a changed person - learning more, exercising more, socializing more, better work performance, and more time for platonic and romantic relationships.

Can't you do these things and still play?
Some can, but I couldn't - for me, gaming was sucking up my time, headspace, and energy.
Living my virtual life, made me lose focus on my deteriorating real life.
For me, the daily log ins and grinding were the "checkpoints" of my day and week e.g.:

Can't you play "AFK"?
This is extremely common in RS (i.e. grind levels while multitasking)
I think if players are serious with themselves - most will realize, like I did, that you're not doing the other activity to the best of your ability (studying, working, etc).
And if you did focus on that activity - it would be done better and faster - progressing your real life "skill level" and giving more time to work and play in a way that makes your life better.

Playing to forget about life's problems?
Unfortunately, most of RS friends and I fell into this category: Grinding and progressing our virtual selves was an escape to my lack of improvement irl.
The constant game updates, kept it stimulating and novel (even though it's the same meaningless nonsense of watching numbers go up).
The energy I spent in being "efficient" in the game, could have been used to make my real life even incrementally better.

What about cravings to play again?
It's a meme in the RS community: "No one ever quits RS".
And it was true for me too: I've tried to quit in the past.
Making my accounts irrecoverable was a big step - looking at my 30,000+ hours played, and seeing my new life responsibilities - there's no way I can justify rebuilding.
With the things I'm working on irl now, if I started again, I would lose all my irl progress - so that real life "sunk cost" also prevents me from restarting.
And as the months go by, the game increasingly becomes a distant memory.

These past 100 days feel like a massive weight has been lifted.
Thanks for reading; hopefully this can positively impact at least one other person.

2021.09.19 18:21 cv5cv6 Am I doing the math right on a Research Points reset of the Shimakaze line? Details below.

Credit cost to buy the Shimakaze line is roughly 46 million, but I have a clan discount of 15%, so this is roughly 39 million. If I sell ships through the research points reset mechanism I get roughly 29 million credits, so my net credit cost is 10 million. Free XP cost to research all of them back is roughly 694,000 for which I get 20,400 research points.
Said differently, I spend 10 million credits and 694,000 FXP and get 20,400 research points. Does that sound right?
