2021.10.16 19:16 ivan3dx Anarchism and left-leaning, colectivist ideas
Hello everyone. I don't consider myself anarchocapitalist, though I may agree with some ideas. What I'm curious about is that I always saw anarchism in general as a left-leaning ideology, however, since I discovered anarchocapitalism existed, it made so much more sense from the "No state" perspective. I'm probably extremely ignorant on a lot of subjects, so please be patient with me haha.
I always thought that the natural state of humanity is some kind of free market. You work, do your thing, and sell your work or products to someone willing to pay for it, for a price you both agree (In the case of a primitive barter economy, you sell your stuff for stuff the other one has... But I can't see that not evolving to some kind of monetary system with enough time in a big enough society).
However, that free market society isn't really compatible with colectivist ideas, unless everyone willingly organise themselves to help the most unfortunate, or work in public infrastructure, etc... In which case it's still totally free market, as the parties willingly participate. So I'm wondering, how is the idea of "anarchism" compatible with the "anti capitalist" or "anti free market" ideology? Someone has to restrict that from happening, right? What would restrict that other than an organised state?

2021.10.16 19:16 HouseO1000Flowers Looking for thoughts on a combat example
At the suggestion of a few of the folks here, I am working on adding "flow" examples at the beginning of several sections in my system. My primary objectives for this are to give players a general idea of how the mechanics within the section actually play out, and maybe, just maybe, get them excited to actually use the mechanics found within the section.
Today, I've been working on a combat example (a system with a huge amount of depth), and I'm decently happy with it, but would love some feedback to make sure my biases aren't doing my work for me. Any thoughts would be very much appreciated.
Your character’s turn in the initiative order is coming fast. You’ve been spending your passive phase defending against attacks delivered from the chronicler’s foes, sometimes successfully, but sometimes unsuccessfully, causing you to take damage to your Health as a result. You see that there’s an archer foe that has already taken their turn - they won’t get another one before yours, and they are stationed only five yards away. You can make it with one major action worth of movement. Definitely an option.Any thoughts are appreciated, but for targeted feedback --
Another foe wielding a mace and a shield is engaged with another member of your circle six yards away - still within one major action of movement. This one is compelling because they are facing a different direction, and if everything stays the same, you could execute a flank attack and penalize the foe’s defenses in doing so. That foe is holding a shield though, their defenses might be particularly tough. You are uncertain whether the flank could overcome the foe’s shield bonuses. Additionally, did that foe take a defensive stance on their turn?
You also took some damage during your passive phase, so it might behoove you to drink the potion you’ve got dangling from your belt. You aren’t in any urgent danger, but one of the strikes you took caused you to bleed. A potion would resolve that and stop the ongoing damage so you don’t have to worry about it slowly sending you into more taxing wound levels.
“It’s your turn,” the chronicler calls. They name your character’s initiative number, so it’s your time. You notice that the archer is only holding a bow, so they would only be able to attempt to evade your strike - probably a better chance of success than even a flank attack on a foe wielding a shield. That’s probably your best bet. But what can you do about your bleeding?
“I’ll attempt to Fast Draw a potion.” You realize that drinking the potion is only a minor action, and doing so would leave you with the two major actions you need to approach the archer and make an attack. Readying the potion is what would consume a major action, but you can make that free instead by using the Fast Draw skill. Yours has a fairly good chance of success at 78%. By announcing what you’re going to do, attempt the Fast Draw, you are committing to the action, so if you fail the skill check, you’ll still have to use one of your major actions. You roll the dice: 52%, a success! Now, you’ve drawn the potion as a free action and can use it as a minor action. This particular healing potion heals for 2D6 Health, so you roll those dice and get a 3. Not great, but it does serve to stop the bleeding damage you’re taking every round. You notate the healing on your character sheet.
Now you have your two major actions remaining. You know you need to get within melee range of the archer to attack them with your scimitar, so you take your first major action to move. You can move an amount of yards equal to your speed, which is 6, but you only need to move five yards to get within viable range. You assess the battlefield and realize that if you only move the minimum five yards, you’ll be facing away from a different foe who might be able to reach you on their turn, meaning you’d be vulnerable to a flank attack. You move your character’s token their full speed, six yards, so that you can execute your strike while still facing in such a way that you won’t be vulnerable to flank or rear attacks from any of the known foes.
Now it’s time for your final major action - your attack. You’ve got plenty of Vigor, so you consider using a technique with your scimitar. Looking over your library of known sword techniques, you see that you have some that add to your strike, some that add damage, and some with special effects such as multiple strikes, or a chance to disarm your foe. There’s a lot to consider, but you notice your foe is only wearing cloth as armor and ultimately land on using the Mortal Slash technique. This allows you to strike your foe to the vitals and ignore the usual penalty of -4 to strike. This is a bit of a gamble - Your foe can realistically only evade as a defense, and cloth armor gives the highest possible bonus to that defense. But, in general the Evade defense has a lower base rating overall, and if you hit, any damage dealt to the vitals not reduced by your foe's armor is doubled. A worthy risk, you think.
After announcing your intent to use Mortal Slash, you roll 2D6 to make your strike. The dice read 7, which when added to your Swing of 20 equals 27 - a solid strike. As you suspected, the chronicler says that your foe will be attempting to evade. Maybe less suspected, but still within the realm of reason, the chronicler announces that the archer is going to check their Leap skill as a means to try to dodge, which adds +2 to Evade if they pass. The chronicler rolls a D100 and the dice read 35% - very likely a pass. Now, they roll 2D6, the result of which they will be adding to the archer’s base Evade rating, plus the bonus 2 from passing Leap. The dice read 6, which is almost surely an unsuccessful defense, unless this group of foes is far stronger than your circle anticipated.
“You hit, and you get +2 damage for strike severity,” the chronicler concedes. Excellent! Now you get to deal damage. Your character’s damage with a scimitar is 2D6+2, but because your strike exceeded your foe’s defense by 4 or 5 (as determined by the chronicler), you’ll be dealing 2 extra damage, for a total of 2D6+4. You roll a 6 on the dice, for a total of 10 damage. Remember, the archer is wearing armor, but it’s cloth armor, which only reduces incoming damage by 1, for a total of 9 damage inflicted. But wait! You used the Mortal Slash technique, meaning this strike was to the vitals. The 9 damage that got past the armor is doubled. At the end of it all, the archer reduces their Health by 18, sending them clear into minor wounds, nearly moderate! This was a very effective round for you.
